February edition of the Gypsy Squares!
February Gypsy Squares Well a fine time was had by all at the February Gypsy Squares. We gave February a firm handshake, a kind word, and a warm send-off, rounded out with lots of lively music and non-stop dancing. Joanne Pontrello provided expert instruction, tying knots with strings of people and somehow, miraculously, untying them again. The crowd was a great neighborhood cross section, with adults of all ages, and children too. That's one of the magic things about this

Surprise Square Dance Party and some artsy pictures
Over the weekend we got to play for a surprise birthday party. The surprise was two-fold -- the birthday gal didn't know the party was happening, and she didn't know square dancing would happen at the party she didn't know was happening. We engaged the talents of Gabe Strand as caller, and set up well in advance at the venue. All went as planned, dancing and music galore, and a good time was had by all. Jordan Dorman was the photographer working the event, and he was kind e

Off and dancing with the Gypsy Squares!
What a great kickoff to our renewed dance series, the Gypsy Squares, at the renewed venue, the Stone Way Cafe! A great turnout, some amazing figures instructed and called by Gabe Strand, and a good time had by all. Looking out from the stage we are always struck by the mix of dancers the venue allows -- young, old, and everything in between. There are so few opportunities anymore for multi-generational interactions. Adults modeling great social skills to kids, and kids mode

Return of the Gypsy Squares!
That's right -- the Gypsy Squares monthly square dance is returning, starting January 31, 2015! We'll be back in the same venue, which is under new management and has a new name: the Stone Way Cafe. The cafe looks great, with a completely updated interior and menu, including new floors! We hosted the Gypsy Squares monthly for two years. In that time it became established as a great neighborhood dance. The venue is a rare one: open to all ages but still serving beer and wi

Heart of the City: Freeway Park
Yes, this happened -- a dance in the very heart of the city, over top of the flow of I-5 traffic, in the skyscraper canyons of downtown. A super event! Some nice feedback afterwards, too: Thanks so much for a great event last week! We had a blast and definitely want to do it again... #seattlesquaredancing

Back Yard Square Dance
This is a story about a party. A grand backyard shindig to celebrate a local coffee shop, Cafe Lulu, owned and operated by Karen Laurie. We wheelbarrowed ourselves down to Karen's house, where the front yard was dominated by a whole pig, roasting in a La Caha China box, the side yard was dominated by tables of food groaning under their own weight, and the back yard was transformed into a grassy dance space and outdoor dining hall. What a magical night! Karen had a sweet ph

Backyard weddings are the best
I mean seriously -- look at these people! We really can't take much credit for their frivolity. Shannon and Andrew are perhaps the sweetest people we've ever met. And their friends can get down! What a fun event. Feedback from Shannon, the beautiful bride, after the fact: Can't thank you enough for your beautiful music at my wedding. People are still talking about it. :-) #seattlesquaredancing
